Super Yacht Classification Societies are commercial maritime organisations that allow superyachts onto their register and maintain, by inspection and certification, the mechanical integrity of the vessel. Classification Societies set technical rules, confirm that designs and calculations meet these rules during the process of construction and commissioning and after commissioning periodically survey vessels to ensure that they continue to meet the rules. These surveys can be quite in-depth and require that the vessel be hauled and the engines stripped. There are many dozens of Marine Classification Societies around the world but there are only six or seven that are of interest to superyachts.
